Preferences, Risk Neutrality, and Utility Functions

چکیده
A binary preference relation on a real vector space V with zero element 0 satisfying four axioms induces a utility function U = f ◦ u : V → R where u:V → R is linear as a map of vector spaces and f : R → R is weakly monotone. The fourth axiom is key: X − Y ( ) 0 ⇒ X ( ) Y (X, Y ∈ V ). The utility function is linear if and only if also satisfies the converse of the fourth axiom. A consequence is that previous axiomatizations of the discounted utility model in deterministic settings by T. C. Koopmans and others unwittingly imply risk neutrality because the axiom sets include the four and the converse.

Investigating the Role of real Money Balances in Households' Preferences function in the Framework of the Assets Pricing Models (M-CCAPM): Case study of Iran
In this paper, we try to develop and modify the basic model of the consumption-based capital asset pricing model by adding the growth in real money balances rate as a risk factor in the household's utility function as (M-CCAPM). For this purpose, two forms of utility function with constant relative risk aversion (CRRA) preferences and recursive preferences have been used such that M1 and M2 are...
متن کاملExplaining Heterogeneity in Risk Preferences Using a Finite Mixture Model
This paper studies the effect of the space (distance) between lotteries' outcomes on risk-taking behavior and the shape of estimated utility and probability weighting functions. Previously investigated experimental data shows a significant space effect in the gain domain. As compared to low spaced lotteries, high spaced lotteries are associated with higher risk aversion for high probabilities o...
متن کاملNewsvendor Models with Alternative Risk Preferences within Expected Utility Theory and Prospect Theory Frameworks
Newsvendor models are widely used in the literature, and usually based upon the assumption of risk neutrality. Recently there is a growing body of literature that attempts to use alternative risk preferences rather than risk neutrality to describe the newsvendor decision-making behavior. In this chapter, we provide an overview of newsvendor models with alternative risk preferences within the ex...
متن کاملDiscounting axioms imply risk neutrality
Although most applications of discounting occur in risky settings, the best-known axiomatic justifications are deterministic. This paper provides an axiomatic rationale for discounting in a stochastic framework. Consider a representation of time and risk preferences with a binary relation on a real vector space of vector-valued discrete-time stochastic processes on a probability space. Four axi...
متن کاملSkewness and market investors risk preferences
Risk preferences are generally measured with utility functions, which are subjective and usually restrict market agents to be risk averse. The current study investigates investors' preferences toward risk from the index price movement perspective. In a risk neutral market, future prices will increase or decrease with the same probability. However, if the market representative-agents are risk av...
